Interview with Rachel Dawson, Elk Car Accident Survivor

Posted by Matthew Smith on Dec 18, 2017 9:23:31 AM

Aftermath of a 2017 Honda Accord Bozeman from a car accident with an elk in Montana.

We can't always control what happens to us when driving.

Outside factors such as pouring rain, cold snow, freezing ice, dark nights, and sometimes, roaming wildlife, can affect the safety of your drive. In fact, one of our own employees, Rachel Dawson, found herself in a dangerous situation on the open road.

We're very, very happy to report that Rachel survived a car accident with an elk on her commute to work one October morning. She was traveling at 80 miles per hour in her 2017 Honda Accord and hit a bull elk head on.

Q & A with Rachel Dawson, Client Adviser at Denny Menholt Honda

We interviewed Rachel to learn more about her accident and spread awareness on the importance of owning a safe vehicle.
Q: What road did the accident happen on? What time of day was it?
RD: “The accident happened at 7:30 in the morning and it was on Highway 69 in Cardwell.”
Q: Could you describe what happened?
RD: “I was going about 80 miles an hour and I reached the top of a hill along the side of a cliff. Suddenly, a big bull elk came barreling out on the side of the two-way highway. When I hit it, the car spun out and thankfully it didn’t flip. I had just enough time to correct the steering wheel. I was moving so fast and there just wasn’t enough time to miss hitting the elk.”

Q: How long have you owned your 2017 Honda Accord?
RD: “Probably about six months.”
Q: Do you think the Accord is a safe vehicle?
RD: "I do. I like the quality of the car overall and I feel safe in it. The car did everything it needed to during the accident. My cellphone was hooked up to the HondaLink technology, and the vehicle immediately called 911."
Q: Did you buy another vehicle to replace the 2017 Honda Accord? What vehicle are you driving now?
RD: “I own a 2018 Honda Accord now. I felt so good about the one I had, and I’m sure they only improved the safety technology in the 2018 model!”
